As the global pandemic has meant many of us are now working from home, it got me thinking. Are you working comfortably? Within workplaces we have our work stations set up: the right chairs, screen breaks, and work stations designed for safety.
From home, that’s not quite the case though is it? People may be working on the sofa with their laptop. You may be relegated to working from your bedroom, so children can home school on the table. The world has moved virtual. It is a growing trend to zoom call rather than using the telephone. More and more of us are glued to our screens, from a work perspective, but also to connect socially.
Even though your staff may be working remotely (at home) you are still responsible for their health and safety. It is important you have a plan in place to stay in touch, and decide if you need to adapt anything to make it safer.
For temporary, at home workers, employers wont need to complete a work station assessment. However, it would be prudent to give them the tools to help themselves. This could be by providing training, checklists or giving them advice. If you were to invest in training now, don’t forget this would still be useful when they return back to the office!
Would it be possible for staff to borrow certain equipment from work to take home? Don’t forget if working on a screen it’s important to have a small regular break. This could be by changing tasks to one without a screen, or to simply change position and have a quick comfort break. It’s preferable to have a short 5 min break each hour rather than having a longer one every few hours.
