Sharps awareness is important for not only care staff, but also those working in waste disposal, or those who may be working in outdoor spaces such as parks. Any of these groups could come into contact with used sharps.
A number of illnesses can be caught from contaminated sharps including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV and Tetanus. Firstly the course will look at the probability of picking up an infection from used sharps. Secondly it will examine the statistics of injuries, and define what is meant by sharps. Many people assume this only relates to needles, but when thinking about waste management could include glass, knives, scissors and nails! Thirdly it will investigate responsibilities of employers to undertake effective risk assessments. Finally the sharps awareness course focuses on the chain of infection. Breaking the chain can stop the process of infection.
Knowledge of the dangers associated with sharps, knowing safe handling techniques and use of PPE will help protect you from the dangers.
